Let’s face it, there are moments when life feels too much to handle. It’s simple to let our health and wellbeing suffer due to work demands, family obligations, and the constant barrage of messages on our phones. I have also been there. I’ve gone days without eating, stayed up too late, or been so stressed out that I was unable to function normally. However, I’ve discovered that even minor, regular adjustments to our lifestyle can have a profound impact.

I want to share with you the seven positive lifestyle characteristics that have improved my physical and mental well-being, as well as the well-being of countless others. These are useful, everyday behaviors that can help you create a more balanced, happier, and healthier life—they are not only textbook advice. Let’s get started.

1. Get Moving—It’s Not Just About Working Out

I used to believe that working out was limited to running marathons or spending hours at the gym. In actuality, though, moving doesn’t have to be difficult or draining. It’s about figuring out how to move your body in a way that makes you feel wonderful. For me, that entails doing a little yoga in the morning, dancing around my living room to my favorite song, or going for a walk in the park with my dog.

2. Eat Not Just to Fill Up, But to Feel Good

In addition to being a source of energy, food is also a wonderful thing. Especially on hectic days, I used to make the mistake of eating whatever was easy and quick. However, I’ve discovered that my eating habits have a direct impact on my emotions. I feel lighter, have more energy, and have better-looking skin when I concentrate on feeding my body full, nutrient-rich foods.

This is what I find to be effective: I make an effort to have half of my plate full with vibrant fruits and vegetables, along with lean proteins like beans or chicken and healthy fats like avocado or olive oil. Additionally, I allow myself to indulge occasionally since life is too short to pass up dessert! Balance, not perfection, is the key.

3. Make sleep a priority; your body will appreciate it.

If there’s one thing I’ve discovered, it’s that getting enough sleep is essential. I used to put in a lot of overtime to finish my work or binge-watch my favorite shows. However, I would feel sleepy, agitated, and generally unwell the next day. Does that sound familiar?

I no longer consider sleep to be an afterthought but rather a priority. I’ve established a nightly regimen that helps me wind down, and I try to get 7-8 hours each night. An hour before going to bed, I read a book, drink some herbal tea, and turn off my phone. When I give my body the rest it needs, I feel so much better.

4. Control your stress before it controls you

Although stress is inevitable, it doesn’t have to rule your life. I used to allow my stress levels to rise until I felt like I had the entire world on my shoulders. But as time has gone on, I’ve discovered better ways to handle it. Mindfulness has changed everything for me. I feel more centered when I set aside a little period of time each day to sit in silence, meditate, or take deep breaths.

We are designed to connect. Spending time with the people I love, whether it be playing with my nieces and nephews, having a heart-to-heart with my husband, or laughing with friends over coffee, brings me some of my happiest moments. Having strong social ties makes us feel understood, appreciated, and supported, much like a safety net.

6. Maintain an Inquisitive and Sharp Mind

Learning never ends after we graduate from school, in my opinion. One of the best methods to stay focused and feel content is to keep your mind engaged and active. That involves reading books, experimenting with new recipes, or even enrolling in an online course for enjoyment. (I only recently started taking pictures, and it’s been such a fun challenge!)

If learning a new hobby or skill is daunting, you don’t have to do it. Your brain may stay engaged and active by doing even simple activities like completing a crossword puzzle or having a meaningful discussion.

7. Foster a Positive Attitude and Gratitude

It’s acceptable to have difficult days because life isn’t always simple. However, I’ve seen that even in tiny ways, concentrating on the positive may have a significant impact. I began keeping a gratitude diary a few years ago, and it has grown to be one of my favorite routines. I write down three things for which I am thankful each night. Sometimes it’s something significant, like getting promoted at work. On other days, it’s as easy as a friendly remark from a complete stranger or a hot cup of coffee.

I’ve been able to change my viewpoint and discover delight in the small things by cultivating thankfulness. It’s about choosing to concentrate on what’s going well, not about dismissing the difficulties.

Perhaps it’s going to bed thirty minutes earlier or including extra vegetables in your meals. Recall that progress, not perfection, is the goal. Every little step you take in the direction of a better, healthier lifestyle counts. And such little actions add up to significant changes over time.
